Award winning singer-songwriter Essence has been immersed in art and music since childhood. Her birth name really is ‘Essence’ – she was raised by quintessential flower children. As a 6th generation native of San Francisco, her parents were two free spirited bohemian artists from the Haight-Ashbury ‘Summer of Love.’
Essence has released 6 albums of her original music on both independent and major labels. Her sound nods to songwriting legends like Tom Petty, John Prine, Lucinda Williams, Dolly Parton and Gillian Welch. Her forthcoming album ‘Father’s Daughter’ is an honest and at times humorous account of her losses and wins; to the bone and from the heart, these songs couldn’t have been written without being lived first. These tracks are steeped in the traditions of the Appalachian, Americana and roots music that Essence grew up on with timeless dobro guitars, aching pedal steels, rolling banjos, and rich vocal harmonies on beds of church organs. Look for this release in 2023.
Essence recently received national and international spotlights for her work with Bernie and the Believers through NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series and BBC. The story and music of Bernie and the Believers is being developed into a Hollywood feature film on which she is co-producing in partnership with Weed Road Pictures/ Paramount and John Legend and his team ‘Get Lifted.” As an extension of this project, Essence is the founder of a newly launched non-profit called ‘The Believers Music Healing Project’ dedicated to bringing healing through music to those who need it most.
Essence has toured nationally, opening for Jason Mraz, Shawn Colvin, Tom Petty, Sarah McLachlan, Chrissie Hynde, Steve Miller, Pat Benatar, and Linda Perry. In addition to her original music, Essence is also one half of a tribute project shining light on the great music and legend of Johnny Cash & June Carter Cash called ‘Johnny & June Forever.
Above all, Essence is a dedicated mother of two spirited children: a 14 year old son and a 9 year old daughter.
